ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH WASTE AND SANITATION MANAGEMENT REPORT

The following are areas where the unit recorded landmark achievements in year 2009.
- DRAINAGE MAINTENANCE
The unit has played a vital role in the maintenance of drainages within the Local Council Development Area and also embarked on monthly desalination/clearing of drainages in all the six (6)wards within her jurisdiction namely Opebi Ward, Wasimi Ward, Olusosun Ward, Onigbongbo Ward and Oregun Ward. Due to the policy of Lagos State Government on clearing, ten (10) selected silted drainages in the Local Council Development Area, the Unit solely supervised the clearing to prevent flooding during the rainy season. The following streets were desalinate and cleared:Ziatech Road, Erewole street, Odundana Street, Community Avenue, Folawewo Street, Ogundana Street, Ijaola Streets, Ibaduarab Street,Olaide-Benson Street,Araromi Street, Akerele Lane among others. All these streets cut-across the six (6) wards in the Local Council Development Area.
-FOOD CONTROL
Food control is another section controlled by the unit. It performed well in the current year and will not relent in the years ahead.
Food control section has been able to regulate and license all standard regulated premises within the Local Council Development Area. The section recorded poison free incident in the year. All regulated premises in the Local Council Development Area were monitored, regulated and licensed accordingly, where a substantial amount was generated.
- PEST CONTROL
Pest control section was resuscitated by the unit in the year under review. The section is now functioning well in terms of regulated premises fumigation and regulation of pest controllers activities in the Local Council Development Area.
- MARKET SANITATION
The unit has performed creditably well on market sanitation to the extent that a modern market owned by the Local Council Development Area was prosecuted in the court of law for defaulting sanitation law. The unit ensure that the market was sealed-up and restructured by the Local Council Development Area. This landmark achievement has drastically improved the Environmental Sanitation (F.G.R) of the Local Council Development Area. The unit has been ensuring regular supervision, monitoring and sensitization of marketers.
- PREMISES INSPECTORATE
The Inspectorate Section has ensured that virtually all the premises within the Local Council Development Area viz-a-viz hospitals, schools, factories, companies, hotels, restaurants, living premises etc are inspected in the year 2009. The Inspectorate Section normally ensures a clean and healthy environment. Any premises found wanting are charged to court for enforcement.
- WASTE MANAGEMENT/DISPOSAL
Waste Management/disposal was regarded as a great challenge to the unit in the past. But with the introduction of Private Sector participation (P.S.P) in the disposal of waste, the challenge has drastically been reduced. Four (4) P.S.P operators are usually on ground in the Local Council Development Area for the collection and disposal of waste. The P.S.P operators are: Peter Bradford and Associates, prestige waste management, Urban Spirit and Temi Environmental Company. Also to compliment the efforts of P.S.P operators in the Local Council Development Area is Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) which has helped in great way.
- ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION EXERCISE
In line with Lagos State Government determination to record a greener and health environment, the unit has been actively involved in monitoring, enforcement and prosecution of defaulters of monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The exercise usually comes at the last Saturday of every month within the hour of 7.00 am till 10.00 am. The citizens of the State participated in the cleaning of the environment. Any defaulter of Environmental Sanitation Laws is arrested by the Law Enforcement Agents and prosecuted in the court of law.
Also in the determination the Local Council Development Area to complement the effort of State Government at ensuring a clean greener and health environment, fifty (50) Street Sweepers were employed in the year 2008 to keep clean all major streets in the Local Council Development Area. The programme is still on going.
- EPIDEMIOLOGY
The section has been collaborating with the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit in the removal of corpseswithin the Local Council Development Area and other arears within the state in general.
- PROSECUTION
This is a section that serves as the backbone of the unit. Prosecution Section always ensures that defaulters are prosecuted accordingly. Prosecution serves as law Enforcement Section of the Unit in the Local Council Development Area.
